Jewish actress Tommy Dorfman first garnered public attention in 2017 for her role in the show “13 Reasons Why.” Yes, for her acting prowess, but also for her style, charisma and care for social justice issues.

Since then, Tommy has shared so much more of herself with the world.

1. Tommy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to a Jewish family.

2. In a recent interview with TIME Magazine, Tommy announced publicly that she is a trans woman and uses she/her/hers pronouns.

It’s funny to think about coming out, because I haven’t gone anywhere,” she said in the interview. “I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy.”

3. Tommy’s name is extremely important to her, and she has no plans to change it.

“I’m named after my mom’s brother who passed a month after I was born, and I feel very connected to that name, to an uncle who held me as he was dying,” Tommy explained. “This is an evolution of Tommy. I’m becoming more Tommy.”
