However you feel about “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” (and we here at Team Alma have many, many feelings) there’s no denying the allure of Sarah Sherman’s Rabbi Rebecca. Her energy, her empathy, her quips, her candor — they all combine to make her the kind of rabbi many of us wish we’d had when we were preparing for our b’nai mitzvah. And while it’s important to pay attention to the depth of her character and what she means to us, can we also take a moment to just say… her style is everything.
If you, like me, have been obsessed with Rabbi Rebecca’s entire wardrobe from the moment she first appeared on your TV, this post is for you. Major shoutout to YASNITMBM costume designer Jordy Scheinberg for absolutely killing it with these looks, and a huge thank you to my BFF Binky Compere, co-owner of Hello Sunshine Art & Vintage in Portland, OR for helping me source more than a few of these items (and also advising all of us to hit up our local vintage shops if we really want to score Rabbi Rebecca’s wardrobe!).
Bespoke Kippahs and Patchwork Crochet
Our introduction to Rabbi Rebecca’s razzle dazzle is in the very first Hebrew school scene. She immediately stands out from literally everyone else we’ve met in the film so far in her bright teal trousers, chunky clogs, dramatic blouse, kitschy boho grandma vest, bespoke kippah and, of course, signature mullet. What can I say, I fell in love immediately.

Big Treadmill Desk Energy
What can’t Rabbi Rebecca do in this outfit? She’s teaching about God (musically!), she’s giving motivational speeches (from her treadmill desk) and she is looking incredibly good while doing it!

No Kissing Next to the Torah Chic
Believe it or not, this is the shirt that sparked this entire guide! On Monday morning one of my coworkers asked the Hey Alma team if we could do some investigative reporting and track down this shirt, and I am nothing if not a Serious Journalist so I got right to it. Though I wasn’t able to track down the exact pieces of every single one of Rabbi Rebecca’s costumes, I felt the same thrill of excitement every time I found something with a Rabbi Rebecca ~vibe.~
1. Nikki Chasin shirt // 2. Pants (make sure to purchase in the color Grape Wine!)
Lydia’s Bat Mitzvah, Cringe Edition
What does a cool rabbi wear to one of her student’s bat mitzvahs? High-waisted emerald satin pants, an Armani pullover and a neon pink satin kippah, obviously.
1. Pink satin kippah // 2. Pullover // 3. High-waisted emerald satin pants
Day to Night Bat Mitzvah Two-Piece
Sometimes you’ve gotta go from day to night for a bat mitzvah, and it’s important to wear a bold patterned two-piece with your signature celebratory neon pink satin kippah. Perfect for encouraging a reluctant bat mitzvah girl to get up to the bimah and for breaking out your dance moves at the party later on.
1. Pink satin kippah // 2. Bold patterned two-piece option #1 // 3. Bold patterned two-piece option #2 // 4. Star of David necklace with rainbow gemstones // Style with your own tallit
Extras
The reason why Rabbi Rebecca’s outfits stand out so much in this film is because at every moment she’s leaning into her own personal style. What that means to you may vary, but if you want to try on Rabbi Rebecca’s, might I suggest experimenting with purple nail polish, fun shades of eyeshadow like purple and yellow, coral red lipstick, gold hoops and of course, her signature mullet? Have fun, cutie-pops.
