Ruth Bader Ginsburg Will Be Wearing a Hanukkah Scrunchie Year-Round

So, a rabbi decided to send Ruth Bader Ginsburg a scrunchie. No, this is not the opening to a joke.

As we know, Ruth Bader Ginsburg loves scrunchies. She wears them all the time. She wears them so often, in fact, we ranked her top 12 scrunchie appearances.

This is why Rabbi Yael Buechler, who founded Midrash Manicures, a company dedicated to “creative religious expression,” recently decided to send RBG a Hanukkah scrunchie. Yes, you read that right: a Hanukkah scrunchie, just for RBG.

Hanukkah Scrunchie

A Humble Request:
Hey Alma's content is free because we believe everybody deserves to be a part of our radically inclusive Jewish community. Reader donations help us do that. Will you give what you can to keep Hey Alma open to all? (It's a mitzvah, ya know.)

(You can also get the scrunchie here.)

Rabbi Buechler did not expect a reply from RBG. But she got one. As she wrote to Alma in an e-mail, “In the aftermath of pretty challenging SCOTUS news, this letter was really a beacon of hope.”

In the letter, RBG writes, “My dear Rabbi: Thank you for today’s surprise, a scrunchie I will wear not only at Hanukkah, but year round.” (Is “My dear Rabbi” not the sweetest thing? Are you crying yet?)

RBG’s dedication to her Jewish identity is well documented — her biographer wrote about how tikkun olam has guided her career — but this is the first time (we know of) she’ll be visually displaying her Jewishness.

So, you heard it here first: year-round Hanukkah scrunchies are officially in.
